There is no specific test that diagnoses Parkinson’s Disease. A diagnosis of PD is made by a Neurologist, based on clinical signs and symptoms. These symptoms include, but are not limited to, slowness of movement (bradykinesia), shaking movements (tremor), balance concerns and rigidity. Often these symptoms will prompt individuals to seek additional advice from GP’s and eventually a Neurologist.
A Neurologist will assess physical function and will take a history of symptoms relating to non-motor areas such as mood, energy, speech and autonomic functions of bladder and bowel.
Differential diagnoses:
Tests like brain MRI scans and bloodwork are often complete to rule out any other conditions that may be contributing to any symptoms like those experienced in PD.
Once diagnosed, Neurologists will discuss with individuals and their loved ones about commencing treatment options, and understanding important PD management strategies.
