What is Young Onset PD?
Parkinson’s Disease is classified as young onset when symptoms occur between the ages of 21-49. This is opposed to typical/sporadic PD which, on average occurs between 50-70 years of age. Young onset Parkinson’s Disease accounts for between 10-15% of all cases of PD in Australia.
What are the main differences?
The main difference is of course, age of symptom onset. In some cases, progression of Parkinson’s symptoms may be slower for those with younger onset PD.
Due to different life stages, young onset PD may come with unique challenges. There may be additional considerations present alongside PD management, such as raising young families and work and career changes.

You are not alone in navigating Young Onset Parkinson’s, and there are many positive things that can help the management of symptoms and your overall wellbeing. These may include:
- Starting or continuing with physical activity and exercise (even just walking!)
- Seeking education and knowledge to increase your own understanding
- Engaging with a Neurologist and health care team for well-rounded advice
- If comfortable or appropriate for you, being open with family and friends about what you are experiencing
Listening to peers and their lived experiences can be comforting and helpful when navigating this diagnosis. It is though, important, to not compare your experience directly to others as everyone is likely to have their own unique challenges.
